Two thoughts:
- Humans are consistently attributed less free will and subjectivity than they actually possess. Humans are not simply reduced to passive objects. They have will and consciousness. Therefore, we need to conduct more research and analysis into what it truly means to be human and how human subjectivity is constituted.
- It seems Sam is also engaging in a bit of a PR pitch here. Because what he doesn't explicitly say is implied: a superintelligence, possessing precisely that persuasive ability that is generally trusted because it is supposedly smarter than humans, is within reach. And OpenAI, or Sam, is presumably claiming this very intelligence (superintelligence) for themselves.
People should always be in control of the future. OpenAI is against the notion that it would be acceptable for people to be relegated to a role of doing things that “AI systems think makes sense to reward in humans”. People should not cede control of the future to superintelligence, and that requirement should ultimately constrain AI progress.
