Google 于 10 月 1 日将四颗 TPU 送入轨道,测试芯片能否开机、处理提示词并把响应传回地球,本周已得到结果,并计划 2027 年再发射两颗搭载 TPU 的卫星。

As futuristic as Google's project may seem, it solves one of the biggest problems currently facing the US.

Besides the enormous demand for chips, there's an even bigger problem right now: energy.

I often bring this up in conversations: China is currently building (or starting to build) around 46 nuclear power plants and will have installed as much solar capacity in 2025 alone as the US has in the last 10-15 years. In the early 2030s, energy and the aging power grid will become the biggest bottleneck for the US.

Not chips, but energy.

And here, China is currently way ahead in the race. To put it bluntly, they've "solved" the energy problem for themselves, and the US is lagging behind. Moving inference or even training into space and using satellite swarms close to the sun to capture energy (about 8 times more efficiently than on Earth) could solve all the problems at once: energy, scaling, and the grid problem.

Our TPUs just phoned home... from space. ICYMI, on October 1, we sent four TPUs into orbit to test whether our AI hardware could operate in space. The initial goal was to see if our chips could turn on, process a prompt, and transmit a response back to Earth. This week, we got our answer. ✨ This milestone brings us one step closer to understanding if space-based compute is possible. We’re sending two more TPU-equipped satellites to orbit in 2027 for our next milestone. Watch this space 👀 and learn more about the first milestone of our long-term moonshot with Project Suncatcher ↓
