NextFin News — Doubao has given travel and local services one of the most prominent positions inside its App. Just before the National Day holiday peak, the chatbot added a tab labeled “Travel with Doubao” directly above the main input box on the home screen, sitting alongside core functions such as general chat and writing assistance. Users who open the section encounter preset prompts for nearby dining, navigation, transport, hotels and entertainment, along with modular entry points that trigger those services.
The design is deliberately simple. Tapping a prepared prompt or a category card launches a relevant flow, usually after location permission is granted. Many of the underlying capabilities already existed inside Doubao in scattered form; the new page gathers them into a single, high-traffic surface. Map navigation draws on Baidu Maps. Ride-hailing links to Caocao, following a recently announced joint AI mobility effort in selected cities. Train and flight suggestions point users toward 12306 or online travel agencies, sometimes with direct links. Hotels and local experiences frequently route into Douyin’s travel and local-life inventory.
The placement itself carries strategic weight. Doubao’s daily active users exceed 200 million. Dedicating one of only a few top-level tabs to travel elevates the category above other experiments, including earlier shopping-oriented features that have been moved farther down the interface. ByteDance is not attempting to own every piece of inventory. It is willing to share traffic with external partners while closing as much of the loop as possible inside its own ecosystem.

That combination has put established local-life players on notice. For months Doubao answered travel-related questions only when users asked. The new gateway shortens the path, supplies ready-made prompts, and sits in plain sight. Didi, Ctrip, Meituan and Amap each hold deep advantages in their respective segments—driver networks, hotel supply, merchant density, mapping data. None of those moats disappears overnight. Yet an AI-native interface that already commands massive habitual usage can lower the friction of discovery and comparison, especially for users who begin with a conversational request rather than a specialist product.
The timing also reflects commercial pressure. Doubao has won the consumer chatbot race in China through heavy investment in model quality and distribution. Sustaining that scale is expensive. Office-oriented agents remain a major battleground with Tencent and Alibaba, but transaction volume offers a more immediate path to revenue. Travel, mobility and local services are high-frequency, relatively high-value categories that platforms have repeatedly used to convert attention into bookings and commissions. ByteDance has already embedded shopping links and “ask before you buy” tools; elevating travel is a logical extension of the same logic.
History supplies a partial parallel. More than a decade ago Baidu, then the dominant search gateway, poured resources into O2O services covering the same verticals. It never became the category leader, yet the competitive intensity helped mature the market. Doubao now occupies a comparable position as an AI-era attention funnel. The difference is that conversational interfaces can personalize recommendations and retain context across steps in ways keyword search could not. Whether that advantage proves decisive depends on execution quality and on how aggressively specialists respond—by improving their own AI layers, by partnering, or by defending inventory more tightly.
Longer-term, the travel gateway also fits a broader shift toward personal agents. Systems that remember preferences, execute multi-step tasks in the background and complete transactions on a user’s behalf are gaining attention globally. Aggregating navigation, transport, lodging and local discovery into one coherent surface is an early way to test whether users will treat Doubao as a standing helper for real-world logistics rather than a one-off chatbot. Success would not require immediate dominance of any single vertical; it would require enough habitual use that “Travel with Doubao” becomes a default mental model.
For now the product remains an aggregation layer with guided prompts rather than a fully autonomous planner. Preset suggestions are generic and do not yet draw deeply on individual history. That limitation is also a strength: it keeps the technical and operational burden manageable while ByteDance observes real usage during a peak travel window. The larger question is whether the company will treat the experiment as seasonal traffic optimization or as the first visible step in converting chatbot scale into a durable local-life and transaction business. Competitors must decide quickly whether to treat Doubao as a distribution partner or as a new front in the fight for everyday service demand.
